about athlone
Athlone is one of the most up and coming towns in the midlands with plenty of things to do, see and visit.
The town is serviced by two major shopping centres with a third one under construction just a little way outside the town. There are branches of all major banks in Athlone with a branch of Bank of Ireland on campus.
Athlone has a broad range of pubs and bars. Athlone is the home of Sean’s Bar, the oldest pub in Ireland and has several late bars with many varying licensed establishments in between to suit all tastes and preferences as well as Scribes, the on campus bar. There are two major clubs in Athlone; Bozo’s, which has recently celebrated it’s 15th birthday and the recently opened Karma, which is an offshoot of Karma in Galway City.
The Regional Sports Centre lies just a short walk outside the town on the Ballymahon Road. It has astro-turf pitches, a fully furnished gym and a 25 metre swimming pool. Exercise classes run throughout the day and into the evening. The Regional Sports Centre also runs a special offer of a nine month membership for students on provision of an up-to-date student card. There is also a bowling alley on the opposite side of town also with astro-turf pitches, Quasar, air hockey and pool tables.
